Initially this fort used to be a fort of bricks, which was with the Rajputs of Sikarwar dynasty.
Its first description is found around 1080 AD, when the army of Mahmud Ghaznavi captured this fort.
Sikandar Lodi remained the first Sultan of Delhi Sultanate from 1487-1517, who traveled from Delhi to Agra and got this fort repaired in 1504 AD and lived in this fort after that.
After that Sikandar Lodi made this fort his capital in 1506 AD and ruled from here.
He died in this fort in 1517.
Later his son Ibrahim Lodi ruled for nine years, Ibrahim Lodi was killed in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526.
After the battle of Panipat, the Mughals took control of this fort and took possession of its immense wealth.
A diamond was also present in this property, which later became famous worldwide as Kohinoor diamond.
After that Babur came in place of Ibrahim in this fort and he built a stepwell here.
Humayun's coronation took place in this fort in 1530.
Humayun was defeated by Sher Shah Suri in Bilgram in the same year and he captured this fort.
This fort was occupied by the Afghans for five years, these Afghans were defeated by the Mughals in the Second Battle of Panipat in 1556.
In view of the central position here, Akbar decided to make it his capital and came here in 1558.
Abul Fazl writes - This fort was a brick fort and its name was Badalgarh, then it was in a dilapidated condition and Akbar rebuilt it again in 1573 it was completed
