Joshimath Chamoli

Joshimath is located on the Rishikesh to Badrinath road, this monastery was established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya, the name Joshimath is a distorted form of the Sanskrit word Jyotirmath.

Earlier this place was called Jyotir Math which means the place of Jyotirlinga of Shiva. In ancient times Joshi Math was known as Yoshi.

Hindus believe that Lord Badrinath rests here during the autumn season. There is a temple here in the form of Narasimha avatar of Lord Vishnu, which was established by Shankaracharya.
